Designer Interview with Faye Marie
What inspired you to become a jewellery designer?
I have always thoroughly enjoyed doing practical activities and making things. While I was at school I took to making sculptures, I guess it spiraled from there. I took a short course in accessories at Central Saint Martins before I did my degree after that I was convinced it was for me. I put a lot of thoughts and themes Into the design process of my collections, I always get very excited seeing these ideas being realised and built up from nothing. It is amazing how a feeling or essence can be encapsulated in a piece of jewellery and then gains further significance and becomes personalised as it gets worn. Equally to the design element nothing makes me happier that working at the bench, the more hands on the better.
What is your favourite piece of jewellery? (either made or purchased)
My favourite piece of jewellery is probably a silver filigree cross I have of my mothers, I remember playing with it all the time when I was young. I never wear it but I have it in a display case in my room. It has a long chain and the cross itself is quite big in a beautifully detailed design where you can see through all the little gaps to where the inside has a cavity space, It is an extremely tactile piece.
Which celebrity would you love to wear your jewellery and why?
If I could pick a celebrity to wear my jewellery It would definitely be Emma Watson. Iv grown up watching her on the screen and turn into such an exceptionally beautiful and strong willed women. A classic beauty but with an edge, I think she embodies the essence of the brand.
Out-with jewellery is there any other career that you would love to try?
After I left university I did try a couple other avenues but It became evident very quickly that my skills and happiness lies in working in a workshop environment where I can be very hands on. Since I started up my brand last year I can see no turning back, I cherish how nice it is to wake up in the morning to have such energy and joy for my job – I am very lucky.
What can we expect to see from you in the future?
I am currently launching the new collection HOPE for which I am hearing such amazing feedback so I am very excited about that right now, some of which you have in store. Im also spending time doing commission pieces which is great as they are more fine jewellery based, I love having a variety – making fabulous engagement rings to making very bold fashion jewellery the next minute.
