Champagne Diamonds
The Allure of Champagne Diamonds: A Designer’s Guide
While the classic sparkle of a colourless diamond has long held the spotlight, there is a growing appreciation for the earthy, sophisticated beauty of the champagne diamond. These stones, with their warm hues ranging from light honey to deep cognac, offer a distinct alternative to traditional white diamonds.
At Nude Jewellery, we are particularly drawn to the tonal richness of these gems. They offer a "rebel luxury" aesthetic—a definitive choice that moves away from the clinical look of traditional diamonds toward something more earthy and soulful.
The Designer’s Rule: Choosing the Right Metal
A common question I am asked at the bench is which metal best suits a champagne diamond. My answer is always the same: 18ct yellow or rose gold.
While white gold and platinum are popular for colourless diamonds, they often have a ‘washing out’ effect on the subtle, honeyed hues of a champagne stone. The cool, silvery tones of these metals can make a champagne diamond appear dull or greyed rather than vibrant.
By contrast, the golden undertones of yellow and rose gold act as a natural enhancer. The metal and the stone work in harmony, drawing out the golden and amber facets to create a glowing, seamless look. This pairing ensures that the natural warmth of the diamond is the focal point of the design.
Finding the Fire: Beyond the Grade
When sourcing stones for our collections, we look beyond technical grading. We select each champagne diamond based on its individual colour and internal fire. Every stone has a unique personality; some lean towards a soft straw yellow, while others have a deep, coppery intensity. By selecting for character rather than just a certificate, we ensure that every ring has a specific, vibrant energy that can't be found in mass-produced jewellery.
Despite their unique colour, these are natural diamonds with a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale. This makes them just as durable for a lifetime of daily wear as a traditional white stone, offering a permanent and hard-wearing symbol of commitment.
Artisan Silhouettes & Ethical Sourcing
In our Atlantis and Selene ranges, we often set these diamonds in fluid, organic forms. Whether featured in a modern asymmetrical cluster or a structural solitaire like the Maisie, the result is a ring that feels tactile and smooth against the skin.
Every champagne diamond ring at Nude Jewellery is handcrafted in our Surrey studio using recycled precious metals. We source our tonal diamonds from trusted suppliers who adhere strictly to the Kimberley Process, ensuring every stone is conflict-free. By focusing exclusively on warm-toned settings and ethical craftsmanship, we ensure that every stone we source is showcased at its absolute best.
