The Allure of Rose Gold: Your Guide to the Romantic Metal

Rose Gold Ruby & Diamond Maise ring

Considering a piece of rose gold jewellery? Here’s everything you need to know about the warm, romantic hue that is capturing hearts.

Rose gold has always been a beautiful metal, but in the past 20 years, I've noticed a huge surge in its popularity. This warm, blush-toned metal feels both modern and timeless, making it a perfect choice for engagement rings, wedding bands, and everyday pieces. Here at Nude Jewellery, we love working with its rich, romantic colour to create unique and unconventional designs that truly stand out.

But what exactly is rose gold, and how is it made? We’re here to explain everything you need to know about this beautiful and distinctive metal.

What Exactly is Rose & Red Gold?

Like white gold, rose gold isn't found naturally. It is an alloy, which means it is created by mixing pure gold with other metals to give it strength and colour. The secret to its beautiful pinkish-red hue is copper.

  • Rose Gold is created by blending pure gold with a mix of copper and a small amount of silver.

  • Red Gold contains a higher percentage of copper and no silver at all, which gives it a more intense, saturated red colour.

The more copper added to the alloy, the more pronounced the red colour becomes.

Carat Clarity: How the Colour Changes

The carat of rose gold refers to the amount of pure gold in the mix, and this directly impacts its colour and durability.

  • 18ct Rose Gold contains 75% pure gold, along with 25% other metals (mostly copper). This creates a softer, more subtle pink tone.

  • 9ct Rose Gold contains 37.5% pure gold, with the remaining 62.5% being a mix of other metals. This higher copper content results in a deeper, more pronounced reddish colour and a harder, more durable metal.

Is Rose Gold a New Trend?

While rose gold is a favourite today, it first gained popularity in 19th-century Russia, where it was known as "Russian gold." It was also a fashionable choice during the Victorian era and had a resurgence in the 1920s. Its current popularity simply reaffirms its timeless appeal.

At Nude Jewellery, we embrace the distinctive beauty of rose gold, using its warm tones to craft pieces that are anything but traditional. This unique colour is especially beautiful when it pairs with other warm tones, working beautifully with champagne diamonds and adding a rich, classic contrast to vibrant rubies.
