The Allure of Rose Gold: Your Guide to the Romantic Metal
Considering a piece of rose gold jewellery?
Here is everything you need to know about the warm, romantic hue that has moved from a niche alternative to a mainstay of contemporary design.
A Maker’s Perspective: The 15-Year Surge
It has been fascinating to watch the evolution of rose gold within my own studio. For many years at the beginning of my career, I was almost never asked to make a rose gold engagement ring; it was seen as a vintage curiosity rather than a modern choice.
However, in the past 15 years, there has been a huge surge in its popularity. Today, it is the metal of choice for those seeking something unique and unusual. It offers a distinct warmth that feels both fresh and heritage-inspired, making it the perfect canvas for our most unconventional designs.
What Exactly is Rose Gold?
Like white gold, rose gold does not exist naturally in the earth. It is an alloy, created by mixing pure 24ct gold with other metals to give it strength and its signature blush tone.
The secret to its beauty is copper. By blending pure gold with copper and a small amount of silver, we create a metal that is as durable as it is beautiful.
Rose Gold: A delicate, soft pink created with a balanced mix of copper and silver.
Red Gold: A deeper, more saturated hue achieved by using a higher percentage of copper and removing the silver entirely.
Carat and Colour: 18ct vs 9ct
The carat of rose gold doesn't just tell you the gold content; it dictates the depth of the colour:
18ct Rose Gold: Contains 75% pure gold. This results in a refined, subtle champagne-pink tone. It is our preferred choice for engagement rings due to its high purity and elegant lustre.
9ct Rose Gold: Contains 37.5% pure gold. Because it has a much higher copper content, the colour is noticeably redder and more intense.
The "Unusual" Aesthetic: Why We Love It
At Nude Jewellery, we embrace rose gold specifically because it allows us to push the boundaries of traditional bridal design. Its copper-red glow wraps around the finger in a way that feels more organic and architectural than white metals.
We find that rose gold is the ultimate partner for unique gemstones:
Champagne Diamonds & Pink Sapphires: These create a breath-taking tonal harmony, where the stone and metal blend seamlessly together.
Teal Sapphires & Black Diamonds: For those seeking a truly unusual engagement ring, these stones offer a high-impact contrast against the soft pink metal.
The "Tactile" Finish: Because rose gold is a robust alloy, it is perfect for our sculptural Atlantis and Calista collections, ensuring the rings are tactile and smooth for a lifetime of wear.
A Heritage of Romance
While it feels modern, rose gold has a prestigious history. It first gained global fame in 19th-century Russia, where it was known as "Russian Gold" after being championed by the Tsar’s court jewellers. Its resurgence today simply proves that true style is cyclical.
Choosing a rose gold ring from an independent studio means choosing artisan integrity. Every piece we create is handcrafted in our Surrey studio using 100% recycled precious metals and is independently hallmarked in the UK.
